Heddle release: April 11, 2021

Light is returning to the northern hemisphere and I have finally tried out an idea that has been brewing for a long while! If you are a geek for folk culture (like me!) you might know that a common way to decorate things is “ye olden dayes“ was to splatter paint over them. I wanted to try it with the horses in an attempt to merge the image of a spotted horse with the old painting tradition, and the result is very pleasing if I might say so myself!

All horses have been painted with all three colors, meaning that the yellow ones have grey and red spots and so on. The yellow and gray colors are rather light, so those spots aren’t as prominent as the red ones which gives a nice depth. Im happy with the milk paint and how it turned out, having learned to paint it thinly and apply many layers to build up a good coat of color. This makes the process time-consuming but I think it is worth it :)

I have used only birch wood for this set, because let’s be honest: It’s much more well behaved than the juniper. This also means that I have been able to make my widest horse heddle yet! This 20-holed darling also has double rows of holes, which would allow you to add extra pattern threads to your band if you want to. I have been experimenting with this myself in the past month and will add a tutorial to the blog as soon as I feel I have gotten the hang of it. There are fine horses in the set with double hole rows, the rest have single rows.

I might add that the double row wasn’t supposed to reach all the way out to the outermost dents of the heddle, but once I get drilling it’s easy to loose focus and just drill all.the.holes. So now they are there, not making the heddle any worse but I would prefer not to use them.

Heddle preview

Last time I released heddles I tried publishing them in the webshop prior to the release date to give you guys a preview of them before they were available for purchase. Turns out that was a bad idea, as most people just thought they were sold out even before their release date. I thought this time I’d try another take on the concept and post the photos here in the blog instead! So without further ado, here are the heddles I will be releasing on Sunday 11/4 at 21.00! And, just to clarify: The heddles will be sold in the web shop, not here in the blog post.
