Heddle release: November 17, 2021

Early this autumn I had the idea to make these really dark blue heddles with windows cut out from the paint, thinking that they would capture the feeling of the Scandinavian winter nights when the world turns dark at 4 PM.

I have always had a mild interest for anything old, inluding old houses, but this autumn I have had a good reason to look closely at things like window and chimney placements and the difference in structure between barns and houses for people. In short: It’s been really fun to carve these! Also it was really fun to shoot these pictures, haha. I felt like I was building up a little Scandinavian town, and I think the old Japanese boro textile I used for background mimics an abstract landscape in a nice way.

It became especially obvious that this was in deed a little town when I started taking photos of the lady heddles Im releasing in the batch. All of a sudden they were showing me around in their hometown!

In order to make the heddles stand up for the photos I use these little sticks which I poke through one of the holes in the heddle and I love to spend time arranging and re-arranging them to show the heddles at their best advantage.

The heddles are all carved out of birch wood and painted with a blue milk paint with varying degrees on indigo powder mixed into it. After drying the paint is coated with lins seed oil to. Even so, the milk paint is a brittle substance and when cutting out the doors and windows it cracks sometimes, like it did on the top middle window here. I have decided to keep these tiny flaws as they are, because most old houses are a little chipped and and I think it only adds to the life of the object.

This set consists of 20 heddles that will be released on November 17, 21.00 Swedish time. The heddles will be for sale in the webshop, not here on the blog. If it is your first time buying a heddle from me you might want to read this blog post to know what to expect! Here is a preview for you guys, so you can have a look at the heddles before they hit the web shop. Click or tap the images to see the heddle name and their pricing!
